Enjoy holiday classics at three Ohio theaters

by Doreen Cudnik

No holiday season is complete without a night at the theater to take your mind of the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping, giftwrapping and decorating. This season, Ohio theaters will present some well known holiday classics for mall-weary theater buffs. Nutcracker celebrates 20th

Cleveland-The Cleveland San Jose Ballet will celebrate its 20th anniversary season of the holiday tradition, the Nutcracker, with opening night set for Friday, December 11 at 7 p.m. Performances will run through Sunday, January 3 at Playhouse Square Center's State Theatre.

According to Artistic Director Dennis Nahat, since the Nutcracker's initial stag-

Lone Star State's third smallest (and funniest) town in this quick-change tour-defarce.

A Tuna Christmas was revived last season for a five week run in the Studio One Theatre at the Riffe Center. This year's three week run, which will feature the return to Columbus of former CATCO resident actor Michael Harper, will mark the final presentation of this crowd-pleasing comedy.

Tickets are available at the Contemporary American Theater Company box office in the Riffe Center, or by calling CATCO at 614-461-0010 or TicketMaster at 614431-3600.

Scrooge and Tiny Tim on stage

Cleveland-Great Lakes Theater Festival will be presenting Charles Dickens'

Le Mai Linh and Dalia Rawson as Grandpa and Grandma Tannenbaum in the Nutcracker.

ing in 1979, the production has grown from one cast for the entire performance run, to nine in the upcoming season.

"It is gratifying to watch dancers develop within the ballet--and bring something different to it each night," Nahat said. "Now the entire company participates and alternates in the principal roles."

Nahat want audience members of all ages to leave performances filled with happiness and fantasy. "Hopefully, we have taken people on a magical journey and left them feeling good about themselves, the holiday and each other," he said.

For tickets, call Advantix at 800766-6048 or 216-241-6000. Group rates can be arranged by calling 440-946-4845. A Tuna Christmasreturns

Columbus-Don't miss the Yuletide shenanigans in CATCO's all time best-selling comedy, A Tuna Christmas, appearing December 12 through December 27 in the Studio One Theatre. Two actors create all the colorful citizens of Tuna, Texas-the

classic tale A Christmas Carol from December 2 to 27 at the Ohio Theatre at Playhouse Square Center in downtown Cleveland.

GLTF artistic director James Bundy said that Dickens' 155-yearold story still remains fresh "because as human beings we never get away from the big ideas that connect all of us, no matter what our culture or background. The theme of redemption, of getting another chance, is universal."

Tickets for A Christmas Carol can be charged by phone by calling Advantix at 216-241-6000, or call toll-free inside Ohio at 800-766-6048. Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more.

Support PWAs while shopping

Beachwood, Ohio-The Eton Collection shopping center will celebrate the true spirit of the season on Saturday, December 12, 3:30 to 6:30 pm, by donating a portion of the proceeds from holiday sales to the Open House, a Cleveland Heights organization that gives support and services to people with HIV and AIDS, their families and loved

ones.

In addition to the fine retailers at the Eton Collection, music and refreshments will be provided for holiday shoppers.

While there, be sure to take advantage of advance ticket prices for the Open House's annual benefit, the Paint the Town Red! Masque Ball, to be held February 12, 1999. The Eton Collection is located on Chagrin Blvd. in Beachwood.
